DESCRIPTION:\nThe Department of Hydrology at the University of Bayreuth\, G
 ermany\, is looking for highly motivated PhD students to work in different
  PhD projects\n\n\nBiogeochemical cycling of iron minerals at the interfac
 e between groundwater and surface water\n\n\nStreams are among the ecosyst
 ems particularly affected by climate change. Long periods of drought (2015
 \, 2016 and 2018) are causing problems in the nutrient and oxygen balance 
 due to extremely low discharges\, up to the formation of completely oxygen
 -free zones in the hyporheic interstitial. Conversely\, heavy precipitatio
 n leads to nutrients and soil particles entering soils in rives\, often wi
 th negative consequences for all those organisms that rely on an oxygenate
 d hyporheic interstitial.&nbsp\;\nStreams are among the ecosystems particu
 larly affected by climate change. Long periods of drought (2015\, 2016 and

  interstitial.\nIn this project we aim at studying the temporal dynamics o
 f the hyporheic exchange and redox processes of the iron (and nitrogen) cy
 cle at the interface between groundwater and surface water at different hy
 drological conditions. The project is integrated into the Bavarian Researc
 h Network &ldquo\;aquaklif&rdquo\; studying the effect of climate stressor
 s on freshwater ecology.\nWe will work both at the field and laboratory sc
 ale and use a combination of state-of-the-art spectroscopic and microscopi
 c techniques in the lab and in-situ monitoring tools for field studies.\nM
 ultiple PhD projects are available to join our diverse\, interdisciplinary
 \, international and dynamic team of aquatic geochemists\, freshwater ecol
 ogists and hydrologists which will provide many opportunities for the cand
 idate to be creative and innovative\, and to work on a challenging and env
 ironmentally relevant topic combining various fields.Ideal candidates shou
 ld have a strong background in Bio- or Hydro-Geochemistry. Applicants must
  have the ability to work independently and in a team\, have excellent man
 agement and communication skills\, and be highly motivated to pursue inter
 disciplinary research. Good computer and language (English) skills are nec
 essary\, and field work experience highly beneficial.\nStart for successfu
 l applicants is at the earliest date possible or early 2019. The positions
  are open until filled. Employment (TVL E13\, 75%\, 3-4 years) will be arr
